This work was composed for Ken Murray in response to Manuel de Falla’s Homenaje: Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy. Having grown up being told that Spain was a small but vital part of my ancestry, it was an ear-opening experience trying to navigate a way through the characteristics and idioms of the Spanish tradition, while using de Falla’s work as the center of gravity, with the ultimate goal of creating a personal response to his Homenaje.

The title of this piece is borrowed from Rebecca Solnit’s “A Field Guide to Getting Lost”, a book which has developed into a comforting and almost-permanent compass point on my desk. I was particularly drawn to a passage that mentioned pine cones falling in perfect circles. Spain is known for ecoregions such as the Iberian conifer forests, and within these forests you can find the Stone Pine, which has been cultivated for its edible pine nuts since prehistoric times, and is also prized as an ornamental plant in most gardens and parks around the world. It is a singularly stoic and magnificent tree and has inspired art, music, and poetry for thousands of years.
